Richard Hughes has resigned as Liverpool’s sporting director and his two-year tenure at the club has come to an end after the club had gone through one of the biggest transitions in recent history.
Hughes told Liverpool’s board he had made a decision to move on and take up a new opportunity when he came across the sea from Bournemouth. He will join him from two seasons in charge of football operations, recruitment and transition after Jurgen Klopp’s departure.
Liverpool appointing Arne Slot to replace Klopp was one of Hughes’ biggest mistakes. The Dutchman left a lasting impression in his first season, taking the Reds to the Premier League title, and providing the side with a successful start to the post-Klopp era.
Additionally, Hughes was part of the club’s recruitment efforts, making significant investments in players to bolster the team’s strength and ensure its continued success at the top of the pyramid. During his years at the helm, he attracted some big names such as Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
But this was also accompanied by a greater focus on Liverpool’s sporting management and recruitment choices, when it was struggling. Eventually, though, the team’s defense of its title turned out to be less successful than had been hoped, and Slot was dismissed.
Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon said he was impressed by Hughes’ work “in a time of great transition” but respected his decision to leave.
Hughes also spoke highly of his time at Anfield, declaring it to be a reason for great pride to have served the club. The former Bournemouth executive is said to be in talks to move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal, though it remains unclear where he will be next.
With his departure Liverpool is now in a position to make another key decision behind the scenes as the club look towards its next sporting leadership role.
