Calvert-Lewin and Baleba Lead Weekend Talking Points

The dominant weekend in the Premier League was defined by discussion around the current performances of Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and midfield tandem of Manchester United’s midfielders, following a 1-1 draw at Elland Road. Calvert-Lewin fell back from his first scoreline of the season, equipped with his fifth goal in 10 games for Leeds.
The striker, on an attacking rampage, played a great role in disrupting Manchester United’s defence, particularly Bryan Mbeumo, before taking prompt action to score a goal from a corner. Defender Calvert-Lewin said after the game he attempted to make life difficult for the defender by anticipating the ball’s trajectory and moving first. He also spoke positively about his time at Leeds, and how he had been treated by the club and its supporters. His strike-rate may help boost his case for selection for the England squad when Kane is injured, but if he remains fit.
However, injuries have scuppered some of Calvert-Lewin’s career and consistency is key to his international career. Manchester United had hope for summer signings Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos. Baleba joined Brighton on a £65m deal and Santos from Chelsea came in for a £50m fee. The midfielders were in the mix together for the first time versus Leeds, and played well with the hosts’ fast midfield.
United coach Michael Carrick hailed their efforts, calling both youngsters “impressive” whilst they are still getting used to the club. The games were a positive move after the United loss to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. But it was not an unproblematic draw for United as Lisandro Martínez was switched to the sidelines at the break due to a tight thigh. Their defensive options may have to take his condition into account as well.
