Liverpool beat Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to secure their place in the League Cup quarter-finals after the sides played out a tense 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday.
The last-16 encounter remained undecided after 90 minutes, with both teams converting penalties during a frantic first half before goalkeepers and missed kicks shaped the shoot-out outcome.
Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted from the penalty spot. The opportunity came after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo, allowing Chelsea to take the lead in a closely contested encounter.
Liverpool responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, Cody Gakpo levelled the score with a penalty after Wesley Fofana was penalised for handball. Neither side managed to find a decisive goal before the final whistle, forcing the tie to be settled through penalties.
The shoot-out delivered further drama as both teams struggled to maintain their composure under pressure. Chelsea’s Valentin Barco struck the post, allowing Liverpool to gain the advantage.
However, Kostas Tsimikas missed the chance to seal qualification when he sent his effort over the crossbar. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili then played a crucial role by saving Emmanuel Emegha’s attempt, keeping the hosts in the contest.
Ryan Gravenberch was also denied by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, ensuring the shootout remained competitive. Joe Gomez subsequently converted for Liverpool, while Fofana sent his penalty wide, confirming the Reds’ progression into the quarter-finals.
The result keeps Liverpool’s hopes of lifting the League Cup alive as the competition moves towards its decisive stages. Chelsea, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on missed opportunities after taking the lead and remaining level through normal time.
Liverpool’s ability to survive the shoot-out pressure proved decisive at Anfield, where a tightly balanced contest ultimately turned on goalkeeping interventions and costly penalties.
