After visiting Anfield on Monday, Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim, captain Bruno Fernandes, and Diogo Dalot honoured Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Anfield’s tributes included a wreath from United countrymen. Fernandes, Dalot, and Jota won the Nations League in June.
A horrific vehicle catastrophe near Zamora, northwestern Spain, killed Jota and his brother Silva on July 3, 2025. Both were expected to attend Liverpool’s preseason in the UK. His truck turned off the road and caught fire early in the morning, killing him. Portuguese United fans wrote on the flowers.
“Rest in peace Diogo and André,” the bouquets read. “With deepest condolences from everyone at Manchester United.” Liverpool has retired Jota’s No.20 shirt across all men’s and women’s teams in memory of him. The Reds made their first appearance since Jota’s death against Preston North End on Saturday, a tribute-filled game. Players from both teams held a minute’s silence for Jota and Silva in the centre circle before kickoff.
In the sorrowful homage, Mohamed Salah led the team, while club captain Virgil van Dijk and Jota’s close friend Andrew Robertson were in the stands despite not playing. Before the game, honours included a minute’s silence.
