The return of Mourinho to Real Madrid has officially started after the Portuguese manager was appointed by the club in a low-key ceremony held on Tuesday at Ciudad Real Madrid.
Mourinho had already been training the team since pre-season on July 10 but Real Madrid officially confirmed his return on July 17 with a contract signature from him as well as from Florentino Perez and honorary president Jose Martinez Pirri.
The 63-year-old coach has signed to return home from a familiar base until June 2029, when he last managed Real Madrid (2010-2013).
Mourinho’s arrival was very different from the elaborate event that is usually a hallmark of the Spanish giants, as he was greeted in a modest way. The peaceful ambience emphasised the gravity of his second stint for Real as they seek to turn things around. It’s all about timing. After two trophyless seasons in LaLiga, Real Madrid are back and will feel the pressure from the competition.
Perez has been re-elected recently but in the recent past has been subjected to more questioning from fans. Mourinho will be coming back to Madrid with the knowledge of what he’s done before and some high hopes for what he can achieve.
He won a LaLiga title and two Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup trophies in his first stint and also had to deal with a lot of tension within himself and draw a lot of attention from the media. His second coming is a different challenge, as he must rebuild competitiveness, while keeping expectations lowered at a club that needs results now.
Mourinho’s return is a mixture of the two – nostalgia and a risky sporting decision. Real Madrid have extended the experienced manager until 2029, which will give him ample time to rebuild the team and put the club on the list of the leading clubs in Europe.
