What does Isak’s transfer mean for Liverpool?

The BBC claimed on Monday that Liverpool have signed Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak on a long-term contract for a British record £125m. Reports say the sale might be worth £130m with add-ons. Liverpool offered £110m with add-ons for the Sweden international earlier this month, but Newcastle declined because they needed a striker.

Following the signing of VfB Stuttgart centre-forward Nick Woltemade, Newcastle agreed. Isak will allegedly undergo medical before Monday’s 7 p.m. BST transfer deadline.

Liverpool have shattered the club record for signing a player for £100m, plus £16m in add-ons for Florian Wirtz. Isak hasn’t played for Newcastle this season and was training alone amid Liverpool rumours. The Eddie Howe team’s Far East tour was also missed.

This month, the 25-year-old accused Newcastle of violating promises in a statement.

“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue,” he posted on Instagram stories.

“Change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

In the summer of 2023, Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £115m, but Alexander Isak will be the most expensive Premier League signing ever.

In 2022, the Sweden international joined Newcastle from La Liga club Real Sociedad for £60m. He scored 27 goals in 42 games in all competitions previous season.
