The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR), which ban clubs from overspending, will remain in force for at least one more season, delaying new financial laws. Squad Cost Rules (SCR) implementation was discussed during the clubs’ London meeting on Thursday.
After accepting that the new regulations would not be ready for next season, teams continued negotiations without voting. Thus, the 2015-16 profit and sustainability rules would continue. Under PSR, teams can lose no more than £105 million in three years.
However, SCR’s proposed rules would limit teams’ spending on player wages, transfers, and agents’ fees to 85% of income, equivalent to UEFA’s 70% financial sustainability requirements.
Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa have criticized PSR for restricting transfer spending. City faces charges of violating 115 financial regulations from 2009 to 2022-23. An independent commission’s 12-week hearing ended on December 6, with a much-anticipated conclusion next month.
