Vitor Reis, a defender for Palmeiras, was signed by Manchester City on Tuesday for a four-and-a-half-year contract. So, Palmeiras paid 29.6 million pounds ($36.20 million) to get the 19-year-old Reis for this year’s Club World Cup.
Vitor Reis is a talented young defender, and we are thrilled to have signed him,” said Txiki Begiristain, director of football for City.
“In his short time in senior football in Brazil, he has shown he has the ability to go very far in the game and we know that working with Pep and our coaches will help to get the best out of him.”
Reis, a Brazil under-17 international, has played in 18 league games for Palmeiras and is a key member of Pep Guardiola’s team makeover.
Also, as part of the team’s generational transition, Reis will join 20-year-old Abdukodir Khusanov, a bright young player who arrived from Lens on Monday for 33.6 million pounds.
After his most difficult transfer battle, Reis “wasn’t anywhere else to go” when Manchester City knocked.
“Everyone has seen the amazing achievements in recent seasons, and I want to make my mark as we seek more trophies,” he stated. “Plus, working with Pep Guardiola is something every young player wants to do, and I know he can help me to develop into the best player I can be.”
After discussing the move with Savinho, Reis gave his approval.
“City also have a lot of experience of working with Brazilian footballers and joining the likes of (goalkeeper) Ederson and Savinho in the squad will be a big help to me,” said.
Also, Palmeiras Academy merchandise Reis, a fantastic centre back and right back, made his senior debut in June of last year. Real Madrid and other major European teams apparently wanted him.
