Dortmund lost 2-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, their third straight Bundesliga loss deepening their problems. The loss increases pressure on Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin, who had club bosses’ support despite their midweek loss to lowly Holstein Kiel.
Serhou Guirassy’s ninth-minute header hit the post when the visitors had the opening chance. Nine minutes later, Eintracht burst clear and Hugo Ekitike, who started the play, finished it, surprising them.
Four minutes later, Eintracht’s curled shot from Ansgar Knauff hit the post. Omar Marmoush was out. The club announced before the game that it was in talks to sign Egyptian forward Marmoush.
In what was likely his last outing in front of the home supporters, the striker congratulated his Eintracht teammates on the pitch. Manchester City are allegedly close to signing him.
Dortmund, who travel to Bologna for the Champions League on Tuesday, could not find a way back into the game despite pressing for an equaliser, with Serhou Guirassy twice calling for a penalty after going down in the box but instead earning a booking.
Oscar Hojlund got too much space to sprint into the area and clinch Dortmund’s third loss in three league matches this year.
“Football is a results-based sport, and we couldn’t win today,” said Dortmund midfielder Pascal Gross.
“Our second-half performance was good, but that’s the standard. The performance was fine, but normal. We lost and got nothing from the game.”
Eintracht’s third straight win strengthened their third-place finish with 36 points, two behind champions Bayer Leverkusen, who play Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday. Dortmund are 10th on 25.
