Donnarumma Stars as PSG Oust Liverpool

After Ousmane Dembele scored 1-0 in the last-16 second leg at Anfield on Tuesday, Paris St. Germain defeated Liverpool 4-1 in a penalty shootout to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.

PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones’ spot penalties after the tie ended 1-1 on aggregate, but the visitors, who have never won the Champions League, converted all of their attempts. PSG will play Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the quarterfinals. Villa leads 3-1 heading into Wednesday’s second leg.

Dembele’s 12th-minute goal against the run of play startled Anfield. Ibrahima Konate blocked Bradley Barcola’s shot but knocked the ball away from Alisson, allowing Dembele to score into an empty net.

Premier League leaders Liverpool conceded their first Champions League goal at Anfield since September 2017 against Sevilla.

Arne Slot’s team fared better than a week earlier, when they needed a last-gasp goal from Harvey Elliott after the Parisians dominated. In the first few minutes, Nuno Mendes blocked Mohamed Salah’s shot on the goal line.

Donnarumma had to dive to stop a Konate shot early, but both teams wasted chances in a tense contest that had supporters on edge.
