This new governance deal will significantly change the way players are represented in the decision making process in global football. FIFA has made a historic deal with FIFPro that gives the players’ union the right to access the FIFA governance processes, including as an observer at FIFA Council meetings.
The deal aims to enhance the players’ voice in decisions about the future of the modern football calendar, competition and regulation. It’s a big institutional shift because, until now, players’ input has only been considered rather than formal.
But, the deal has its strings attached. FIFA has emphasized that FIFPro should drop all current legal action in order to continue with the deal. One of the main cases goes back to October 2024 when FIFPro launched an “abuse of dominance” claim. The complaint was about a congested match schedule and its physical demands on players.
The agreement from a governance standpoint represents a step towards easing tension between the governing body of football and its most critical asset: the players. It also suggests a heightened demand for FIFA to consider athlete welfare when expanding its commercial activities.
FIFA Council’s ability to have observers at its meetings is especially significant. It does not give voters a direct voice in voting, but it does show them what goes on at the highest decision-making level, which they were not previously able to see.
This could be a strategic response to resolving longstanding tensions with scheduling, workload and expansion of international competition. It also puts FIFPro in a new light as a more integrated player in football governance, instead of a critic from the outside.
