Simeone Aims for Champions League Final with Atletico

Diego Simeone stated that Atletico Madrid wants to win the Champions League and maintain their current form prior to Tuesday’s game against Bayer Leverkusen. Under Simeone, Atletico Madrid lost to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016, making them the only team to make it to three Champions League finals without winning.

The hosts will play Bayer Leverkusen, who has won 11 straight games in all competitions, while Atleti’s 15-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday when they lost 1-0 to Leganes in La Liga.

The new league phase of eight still has two Champions League games left, and the top eight teams advance automatically to the round of 16.

The game, according to Simeone, is essential to their pursuit for the top eight: “We will compete with our goal in mind. We want to make it to the Champions League final, which we treasure, as the team has never won it.

To get to the round of 16, teams ranked ninth through twenty-four will compete in two-leg knockout playoffs.

“Xabi is doing well and is expected to repeat what he did last season. From the middle of the field, where it is most visible, he explained his perspective on football.

“He had excellent coaches while playing. It must be our strategy to do harm on Tuesday.

After hosting Leverkusen, Atleti will travel to Austria to play Salzburg on January 29.
