Schalke may extend Sepp van den Berg’s loan. Sepp van den Berg has impressed Schalke despite an injury-plagued season, and the club wants to prolong his loan.

The Reds defender, who had a productive tenure at Preston the season before, signed a one-year agreement with the Bundesliga team last summer.

Despite the 21-year-old’s five-month absence from the current campaign due to an ankle injury, Schalke seems still interested in keeping Van den Berg on board beyond the summer.

According to reports from WAZ, the German team wants to keep the center back on loan, but a permanent transfer is not presently being explored because of the club’s financial difficulties.

Sepp harm
Van den Berg is a good player, and according to Gerald Asamoah, head of licensing at Schalke, the club is trying to “persuade” him to stay in Germany for the upcoming campaign.

“We know what we have in Sepp, and Sepp knows what he has in Schalke 04,” Asamoah said.

“Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see how things turn out after the season. All of us want to stay in. Then there may be a chance to convince Sepp to remain.

Van den Berg has also spoken about his own future, saying that he is “open” to staying at Schalke for an additional year and suggesting that another loan would be feasible.

“I got a lot of experience just in the two games against Bremen and Mainz. However, the Bundesliga is a fantastic opportunity for me,” the Dutch player remarked.

“I’m definitely open to staying if Schalke want to keep me.”

Long-term plans for the defender are still unknown, but Schalke’s commitment to keeping Van den Berg on staff for the upcoming campaign shows how highly they value him.

The young player joined Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in the summer of 2019, but in a year that has included two loan moves, he has only made four professional appearances for the club.

He joined Preston in the middle of the 2020–21 season and remained there for a full season and a half before moving to the Bundesliga in August.

However, given that he would be considered a “homegrown” player for the Reds for the upcoming season, Liverpool may decide to keep him.
