The Real Madrid Tebas saga has just come to a new level after the Spanish giants demanded that LaLiga (Liga Profissional de Balonquestro) president Javier Tebas resign in response to his remarks on the club’s grievances against referees.
Real Madrid had suffered their second defeat of the season in LaLiga at the hands of Atletico Madrid on Friday. It was met with vehement protestations from Real on several occasions for the decisions made by the refs.
Real’s official match report said that the referee was “indispensable” in the derby. In the 37th minute of the second half, Jude Bellingham and Atletico goalkeeper Cristian Romero had a big fight. Initially, Bellingham had been booked after the game, but VAR intervention resulted in him being cautioned.
Real Madrid claimed Romero deserved a red card for his challenge. The club also raised questions over Lee Kang-in’s tackle on Fede Valverde which caused Jose Mourinho to denounce referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias and anyone who appointed him.
The situation escalated further when Real Madrid submitted its grievances on social media, which were then picked up by Tebas. He declined to agree that referees had been directed to make rulings against the club, and said that it was trying to distract from match play by focusing on “conspiracy theories.”
Real Madrid issued an official reaction, denouncing Tebas’ comments and asking for a change of leadership at LaLiga. The club claimed that the league president had been meddling with Madrid’s integrity and reputation in numerous ways.
The statement also demanded a leader that would give importance to neutrality and be able to run Spain’s professional football championship. Real Madrid are holding on to fourth place in LaLiga after seven games for a seven-point deficit to runners-up Barcelona.
