RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg not bothered by title implications

RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg not bothered by title implications. With only three games remaining, RB Leipzig is presently third in the Bundesliga, behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. They cannot mathematically overtake either Bayern or Dortmund, but if they don’t have the right outcomes, they risk falling out of the top four and losing their chance to qualify for the Champions League. Both Union Berlin and SC Freiburg are only one point behind Leipzig in 5th and 6th place, respectively, and Leipzig still has to travel to the Allianz Arena to take on Bayern in one of their remaining matches.

Bayern has won the DFL-Supercup from the two matches it has played against RB Leipzig so far this season, while the Bundesliga match between the two teams during the Hinrunde, which technically took place after the World Cup and the holiday break, ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams have seen their fair share of turbulent periods this year. Leipzig had to change their manager for the second time in as many seasons when Marco Rose succeeded Demeico Tedesco, who had taken over for Jesse Marsch last year. Bayern decided to switch out Julian Nagelsmann for Thomas Tuchel for what they claimed were only sporting considerations because they felt that Nagelsmann wasn’t quite living up to their expectations.

To come full circle, the clash between Bayern and Leipzig on the penultimate match day of the Bundesliga season has so much significance for both sides. Just weeks before the DFB-Pokal final versus Eintracht Frankfurt in Berlin, Bayern’s chances of winning their 11th consecutive Meisterschale and Leipzig’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League are both in jeopardy.

Emil Forsberg, a midfielder for Leipzig, was questioned by Sport Bild on the possibility of defeating Bayern and helping another team win the Bundesliga for the first time in 11 seasons. If Bayern do drop points, Dortmund would likely win the title. The Swedish player claimed that for the time being, his only priority is ensuring that Leipzig finishes the season in a Champions League berth. “I’m hoping to defeat Bayern so that we can go to the Champions League. Dortmund is responsible for the remaining tasks. If it occurs, BVB would have earned it, he stated politely (via @iMiaSanMia).

Borussia Monchengladbach, FC Augsburg, and Mainz are the opponents for Dortmund’s remaining matches, whereas Bayern has Schalke, Leipzig, and FC Koln left. On paper, both of those fixtures’ lists are just about equal, but both Dortmund and Bayern have proved that they can slip up and miss points where they really shouldn’t be. Anything could happen with three match weeks left to play.
