Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured the Ligue 1 title on Saturday with a 1-0 win at home against Angers, just days before their Champions League quarter-final clash with Aston Villa.
PSG needed only a draw to guarantee the title; they entered the game 21 points ahead of second-placed Monaco. Early in the second half, Luis Enrique’s squad sealed the championship with six matches still to go with a goal by Desire Doue.
Reiterating their supremacy in French football since Qatar Sports Investments acquired PSG in 2011, this represents their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title and their 11th in the last 13 seasons.
“Our ambition is to win everything,” said captain Marquinhos, who currently boasts ten titles since joining the team in 2013.
“It’s a pleasant sensation.” The Brazilian center-back said, “It is the reward for the work we have put in throughout the season; for our consistency, the team deserves it.”
Having 13 French league titles, PSG now boasts three more than Saint-Étienne, with 10 but no title since 1981. Marseille has nine titles; Nantes and Monaco each had eight crownings as champions.
Given PSG’s emphasis on their forthcoming European challenge, celebrations were more subdued even if their Ligue 1 victory has become rather ordinary. Still, coach Luis Enrique was raised by his staff in honor of the success, and the players rounded the Parc des Princes in a lap of honor.
PSG’s focus today is on their Champions League quarter-final, hence the ceremonial trophy presentation will take place later on. Wednesday at the Parc des Princes marks the opening leg against Aston Villa; then, on April 15, the return trip from England.
