Musiala: The Star Bayern Had to Keep

Jamal Musiala draws fans to the arena. He plays brilliantly. You sometimes think he defies gravity. Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer praised Musiala, 21, after the club revealed he had extended his contract until 2030.

The record German champions must be relieved because he was close to finishing his contract. Bayern may have been in trouble without an agreement with Premier League and La Liga clubs interested.

According to club insiders, Bayern and Musiala’s representatives were negotiating well at the conclusion of last year, but it took a long to finish. Musiala will make £20.8m per year with his new contract, making him one of Bayern’s top earners along with England captain Harry Kane.

The Musiala-Kane combo has helped the squad lead the Bundesliga by eight points above Bayer Leverkusen, whom they meet at the BayArena on Saturday. Friday’s announcement may boost Bayern’s morale before the top-of-the-table match. Chelsea academy graduate Musiala joined Bayern in 2019, and manager Vincent Kompany and director of sport Max Eberl want to build the team around him.

Bayern hoped they had found a rare jewel when he left England, despite his lack of fame. They surely did. Musiala, from Stuttgart, went from a talented midfielder to Europe’s top playmaker in a few years.

After playing for England’s youth teams until November 2020, he joined Germany and became Die Mannschaft’s captain alongside Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.
