Morocco joins Portugal and Spain in transcontinental bid to host 2030 World Cup
In a three-way alliance with Spain and Portugal, Morocco is expected to replace Ukraine in the race to host the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2030.
Last October, Ukraine declared it will collaborate with Spain and Portugal in a joint bid; however, Morocco’s announcement suggests it will no longer be involved. CNN has contacted each of the participating countries.
Chakib Benmoussa, Morocco’s minister of sport, revealed information about the North African country’s proposal on Tuesday, citing a letter from King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
According to Reuters, he read from the letter, “I would like to announce that the Kingdom of Morocco has agreed, together with Spain and Portugal, to present a joint candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup.”

Morocco is poised to play in the World Cup final, but France will be its toughest opponent.
Benmoussa described the bid as “unique in football history” when speaking at the Confederation of African Football President’s Outstanding Performance Awards in Kigali, Rwanda.
He said that it would “bring together the worlds of Africa, the Arab, and the Euro-Mediterranean, as well as the northern and southern Mediterranean.” It will also bring out the greatest qualities in each of us, combining our intelligence, creativity, experience, and resources.
