At least in terms of the way it was played, Spain never lost the ball during the final. However, they held the upper hand, with a huge 20-2 lead in shots and forcing Argentina to play in a defensive phase most of the time. Despite the presence of Messi as a leader, he wasn’t able to play a decisive game in the match.
That was reflected emotionally at the end of the game, when Messi was visibly upset as the Argentina campaign ended. Lionel Scaloni’s captain was supported by his head coach, Lionel Scaloni himself, in a public statement, which further cemented his legacy in the sport. He spoke about Messi’s greatness, saying that it is not about the win, but about him being the greatest player in the history of football.
The immediate question then becomes continuity, however. The Italian told Italian newspaper Gazzetta di Parma that there has been no discussion yet on Messi’s international status. The Argentine captain walked off without speaking to the press, adding to the speculation.
Spain forward Ferran Torres admitted that the psychological element was always playing a part when he faced Messi, but added that Spain were only concerned with their own plan.
