Messi is Confirmed to Lead Argentina at Gongti in June. According to Beijing Daily, the Argentine Embassy in China has announced that star player Lionel Messi will go to Beijing to captain the national football team in a friendly game in June.
The announcement follows last week’s confirmation that the match between the Australian men’s team and the FIFA World Cup 2022 champions will take place on June 15 at Workers’ Stadium.
The Argentine Embassy today revealed Messi’s participation in a post on Weibo (see below). The tweet also states that the Argentine team’s next destination will be Jakarta, Indonesia. According to USA Today, Argentina will meet the Indonesian men’s squad there on June 19 in another friendly.
Messi Confirmed to Lead Argentina at Gongti in June
Messi won both the Golden Ball and Player of the Match awards in the FIFA World Cup final, making him the tournament’s top performer in 2022.
Even though it’s just a friendly, the two teams are facing off in somewhat of a replay after Argentina defeated Australia 2-1 in the World Cup’s Round of 16 last year. Australia was eliminated as a result, while Argentina advanced to their eventual Cup victory over France.
Other details have not yet been disclosed, and according to our contact at Gongti, ticket sales will start closer to the game’s date.
