Lionel Messi was left with no choice but to make the most of his Messi goodbye as Argentina captain, converting three chances to make a game-winning goal for Benin 3-0 in a friendly before an emotional half-time showdown at the Estadio Monumental.
The 39-year-old opened his last international appearance with the crowd filling the stands and chants of “capitan” before and during his 208th appearance for Argentina in the stadium. Messi started the game and unleashed his creativity soon after the break. His corner saw Nicolas Otamendi hit Argentina ahead in the 48th minute.
Then the former eight-time Ballon d’Or winner became a provider again, setting up Nico Paz for the second goal before finishing off with an amazing send-off of his own.
The 126th international goal came in the 70th minute as Messi netted a penalty, only to be met with a passionate reaction from the crowd. As the importance of the occasion grew louder, supporters were chanting his name over and over.
After the match, Messi said to the fans it would be difficult for him to leave the national team. He said that the reason is that it’s going to hurt a lot if he doesn’t come here again, but that being Argentina is the best part of his football career.
With Messi’s retirement, football will become Argentina’s record appearance holder and top scorer. Played in six World Cups for the country and three finals, including Qatar 2022, which Argentina won.
He also played a key role for Argentina to win Copa America in 2021 and 2024. He is not retiring from his club career, however, as he’s retiring from his international career. Messi’s contract with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami will expire in 2028.
