Merseyside Derby Fallout: Slot Gets Two-Game Ban

Liverpool manager Arne Slot will miss Wednesday’s home match against Newcastle due to a two-match ban and hefty punishment for his behavior in the Merseyside derby. On February 12, James Tarkowski’s equalizer for Everton in stoppage time of the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park caused chaos.

Referee Michael Oliver sent off Slot, his helper Sipke Hulshoff, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, and Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure. The FA announced on Wednesday that an independent regulatory commission sanctioned Everton, Liverpool, Slot, and Hulshoff.

“It was alleged that the Liverpool head coach acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after the match had finished,” stated.

“Arne Slot admitted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a two-match touchline suspension and £70,000 ($89,000) fine.”

Everton (£65,000) and Liverpool (£50,000) have also been punished.

After the final whistle, Arne Slot and Hulshoff were disqualified for approaching Oliver. Slot stated at a news conference two days later that he had “made the wrong decision” due to his emotions.

“I should have acted differently after the game, but it´s an emotional sport and sometimes individuals make wrong decisions and that´s definitely what I did,” he said.

Jones confronted Doucoure after the Everton midfielder celebrated in front of Liverpool fans before players and staff from both sides ran over. Slot will sit in the stands for Wednesday’s Newcastle game and Liverpool’s home match against Southampton on March 8 because to the ban.

He will be allowed in the technical area when Liverpool play Paris Saint-Germain in the opening leg of their last-16 meeting on March 5 because the ban is for domestic games only. He will also be on the touchline for Liverpool’s League Cup final versus Newcastle at Wembley on March 16.

Liverpool lead the Premier League by 11 points over Arsenal and are favorites to win a record 20th title.
