Mohamed Salah scored two goals to help Liverpool beat Bournemouth 2-0 on Saturday. Third-placed Nottingham Forest beat Brighton 7-0. With 178 goals, Salah passed Frank Lampard as the sixth best striker in the Premier League. This helped Liverpool move closer to a record 20th English Premier League title.
Bournemouth had won its last 12 games across all competitions. This season, it beat Arsenal and Manchester City at home. The Cherries had two chances to score before break, but Antoine Semenyo and Marcus Tavernier missed them. Also, Bournemouth didn’t like the chance that started the scoring after 30 minutes.
Lewis Cook didn’t seem to trip Cody Gakpo as he walked up to the box; instead, he seemed to clip his feet. VAR did not overturn referee Darren England’s call to go to the penalty area. Salah scored his 20th Premier League goal with a strong shot.
After break
Bournemouth had a hard time scoring. Justin Kluivert missed two chances, and Tavernier’s shot hit the post. It was a huge three points for the title chasers when Salah cut inside with his left foot and curled the ball into the top corner. Mohamed Salah, whose future at Liverpool is unclear, said, “It feels good to score goals and win games, but my main goal this season is to win the Premier League with the team, so we must keep going.”
Arsenal is now in second place, but they have to beat Arne Slot’s team and then play Manchester City on Sunday, who are the current winners. After an exciting win over Brighton at the City Ground, Forest tied Arsenal for first place in the table with 19 points. Their loss to Bournemouth last Saturday was 5-0, but Chris Wood scored a hat-trick to help them get back on track.
Goal?
After Lewis Dunk scored an own goal, Forest scored three more goals through Morgan Gibbs-White, Neco Williams, and Jota Silva. “After what happened last week, the answer was good,” people in charge of the Forest said. “You get punched, you get up – fantastic!” Fifth place Newcastle lost to Fulham 2-1 at home and now trail the two-time European winners by six points. The other team is still on track to make it to the winners League. Newcastle took the lead at St. James’ Park thanks to a goal from Jacob Murphy.
But Fulham scored two goals in response to move up to ninth place and within four points of the top six teams. After beating Leicester 4-0, Everton no longer has to worry about being relegated in their last season at Goodison Park. Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the game’s first goal in the 10th second, giving David Moyes his third win in four games since coming back to Everton. Then, Beto scored twice before halftime because Leicester’s defence was so bad, and Iliman Ndiaye sealed a shocking win in extra time.
With a 1-0 win over Aston Villa, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s goal helped Wolves move out of the bottom three and above Leicester. After making it to the round of 16 in the Champions League last week, Villa have lost seven games in a row after a European game, which makes it less likely that they will be back next season.
Portsmouth beat Ipswich 2-1 at Portman Road in their first league game since November, making it look like they’re doomed. Seven points separate Saints from second-bottom Ipswich, but they are still 10 points away from safety after Paul Onuachu’s late winner.
