Khadija Shaw scored Manchester City’s third goal in a 3-1 win over Leicester despite missing their midweek League Cup semi-final against Arsenal to safeguard her mental health after racist and misogynistic internet abuse.
On Tuesday, City condemned the abuse of their record goalscorer after their 4-3 Women’s Super League loss to Arsenal last weekend and announced an investigation. Shaw was ruled out of the League Cup match against Arsenal on Thursday night.
Shaw came off the bench in the FA Cup fifth-round match at the Joie Stadium with City 2-0 up after Leila Ouahabi and Kerolin scored. Before Nelly Las equalized, Shaw scored City’s third 13 minutes after coming in.
“I think that will give her a lot of confidence,” City manager Gareth Taylor told the BBC. “She’s coming out of a team at a time when you don’t want that, especially after injury.”
Third-tier Rugby Borough made Liverpool sweat with Marie Höbinger’s 84th-minute opener and Mia Enderby’s extra-time goal. Ashleigh Weerden and Abbie Larkin scored with less than 10 minutes left to beat Newcastle 2-0.
