Harry Kane scored his first goal of the season as Bayern Munich survived a scare to beat promoted Elversberg 2-1 on Sunday and maintain their strong start to the Bundesliga campaign.
With Manuel Neuer rested, Kane took the captain’s armband in a game which had been very entertaining as he sliced in the 72nd minute to put the game on ice after Elversberg had built up a goal deficit. The England striker had yet to register a goal in the first two league games of his season at Bayern but had his opportunity to redeem himself when he turned a powerful shot in through a congested penalty area.
Bayern had been given a cross to take the lead in the 26th minute but it had been played into the hands of teenage Germany winger Lennart Karl instead of Kane. Elversberg came back after half-time when Maurice Krattenmacher, from the edge, curled a great finish to level the scores at 1-1.
Kane followed that up with the break of the game, breaking that drought of goals in the Bundesliga and giving Bayern three points in a tough setting.
“That’s football, it takes longer than you think sometimes,” Kane said to DAZN. Three points and a goal, it was good to get them,” it was a challenging place so we’re happy with the win.
The win brought an unbeaten start to an end for Elversberg, who had won their first two games since they were promoted to Germany’s top flight. As a team of a town with 13,000 residents, the club is the smallest community to have sent a Bundesliga team.
RB Leipzig had a much more vocal reaction to their recent poor form last season by rout Hamburg 5-0. Antonio Nusa netted a goal and set up a pair of goals, one coming from Christopher Nkunku who scored his first goal back in Leipzig.
