England Held as Kika Stuns with Equalizer

England’s Women’s Nations League debut in Portugal ended in a disheartening 1-1 stalemate after Kika Nazareth’s magnificent shot equalised Alessia Russo’s opener.

The Lionesses started their first match of 2025 with Russo’s goal in the first 15 minutes, but Sarina Wiegman was frustrated as they failed to capitalise on their dominance.

Lauren James, making her first England appearance since April, tried the spectacular numerous times, but England rarely looked like expanding to their lead. Portugal manager Francisco Neto called Nazareth on shortly before the hour mark, and she soon had her say to the pleasure of the home crowd at a sold-out Estadio Municipal de Portimao.

The Barcelona star raced Grace Clinton frequently and brushed off a challenge from the midfielder before firing her equaliser into the top right corner beyond Mary Earps.

England had 68% possession but only four shots on target ahead of a challenging match against Group 3 leaders Spain on Wednesday after the World Cup champions overcame Belgium 3-2 to top the group.
