Eddie Howe will depart Newcastle after departing as manager with immediate effect, having led the club to greatness for five years. The 39-year-old left his job after speaking to Newcastle United’s senior management, reports international media. The club has yet to comment on the matter, though it is believed Howe told Newcastle that he was stepping back from football management.
Howe’s reign at St James’ Park will no doubt be recognized as the club’s most pivotal era in recent history. He joined in 2021 and played a pivotal role in Newcastle turning the club into a regular contender for European qualification when they finished as runners-up in the EFL Championship in 2022.
It was under his leadership that Newcastle qualified for the UEFA Champions League in 2023 and in 2025. The club even reached a milestone of 70 years after waiting for a major trophy in football and secured the League Cup victory in 2025, which was a historic moment for fans.
But the team struggled in 2025-26, as Newcastle ended up in the 12th place, having lost 17 of their 38 Premier League games. Howe’s last game in charge was a tough pre-season loss to Championship team Bristol City 4-1.
Howe has left a solid legacy at Newcastle, although his tenure does come to a crumbling conclusion. After the Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle, his tactics, player development and ability to restore confidence around the club was recognised.
Now the club has turned its attention to securing his replacement – several candidates are said to be in the running. According to Sky Sports, Al Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle is among the top choices to replace Guy Smithers.
The Newcastle manager will be under the spotlight as the club aims to continue their bid for European qualification and for them to fight toe-to-toe with England’s top clubs. With Howe’s resignation, Newcastle has begun a new chapter in its leadership.
