The strain on Potter from Chelsea’s problems has increased as the club has spent more than £550 million since Todd Boehly took over as manager last summer.
The performance was booed in some areas of Stamford Bridge, and after the game, the hashtag “Potter out” was trending once more on social media.
But, former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink defended the manager, stating they “must continue with” Potter. The former Brighton manager accepted the blame for the loss.

Since the competition’s establishment in 1992, Chelsea has only lost and failed to score in four home Premier League games twice: in 1994–95 and 2019–20.
In the Champions League quarterfinal this month against Real Madrid, Potter acknowledged that his team was not at their best versus Villa.
Ben Chilwell scored for the Blues, but the goal was disallowed due to a push on Ashley Young’s back.
Mykhaylo Mudryk, who cost Chelsea £89 million when he was acquired in January, wasted Chelsea’s finest chance by putting up a feeble attempt in a one-on-one situation with Emiliano Martinez.
N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic squandered opportunities, while Kai Havertz and Joao Felix had attempts stopped.

Potter said on Match of the Day, “There is always disappointment after a loss. We must evaluate our performance and consider what we did well and what we can improve upon. “There is always a sensation that we have not advanced, that’s fair to say.
“Defensively, we’ve left ourselves too open, but again, if you look at the game’s statistics, we had our 
opportunities and one-v-ones, but we came in second place when scoring goals.
We are a team, we have to stick together, we are together, and we win or lose together, therefore I don’t like to place the blame; I have to accept responsibility.
“We’ll get better, and we’ll get ready for the next game. There is no doubt that we must respond. Nonetheless, we anticipate it.
Chelsea’s next 10 games still include matches against Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle United, and the chance to qualify for Europa seems to be dwindling.
