Benzema Opens Up on Life After Ronaldo

After Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid in 2018, many wondered who would replace him. Karim Benzema explained his thoughts at the time.

Ronaldo dominated at Santiago Bernabeu for over a decade. The team suffered greatly after his departure. Benzema, who had played with the Portuguese forward for years, became famous. After Ronaldo went, Benzema knew it was his chance to shine.

He told El Chiringuito, “When Cristiano left, who had scored 50 goals, I said, ‘Now it’s time to step up.’” My potential was there, but I needed more ambition.”

It was difficult to adjust. The 2020-21 season was difficult for Benzema. He recovered stronger the next year. He helped Real Madrid win La Liga and the Champions League in 2021-22 with 44 goals in 46 games. He won the 2022 Ballon d’Or, proving he could lead the team to glory.

Benzema was proud of his Madrid career ending. “I’m glad my last image at Real Madrid is a champion, Ballon d’Or winner, and captain. I had the strength to continue, but I wanted to leave on time.” In his last Real Madrid game, Benzema scored a penalty in a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao.

He won five Champions League crowns, four La Liga titles, and three Spanish Cups with 354 goals in 648 appearances for Madrid. Real Madrid wanted to extend Benzema’s contract for another year, but he left in 2023 for a new challenge.
